Man in court over Belfast bomb find

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with the discovery of a large incendiary-type bomb in Belfast at the weekend.

Terence McCafferty, 34, from the New Lodge area of the city, was charged with conspiracy to cause an explosion and possessing an improvised explosive device.

The incendiary device was found to have been made up of gas cylinders and pipe bombs linked to containers full of flammable liquid.

The car was parked near the motor tax office on Upper Queen Street at about 6pm on Sunday.

A detective sergeant told the court that when the accused was charged he made no reply. He said he believed he could connect him with the charges.

Mr McCafferty denied the charges but was remanded in custody until December 18.

A second man is under police guard in the Royal Victoria Hospital where his condition is described as "stable" after being shot by police during the operation.
