McGinn Condemns Closure Of Addiction Clinic
Sinn Fein Councillor Pat McGinn has spoken out against the closure of the Cuan Mhuire addiction clinic in Newry.
Staff at the clinic were informed last week that the unit would no longer admit new residents.
The closure is due to the construction of a new motorway section.
Ex-Mayor Mr McGinn spent a period at Cuan Mhuire to treat an addiction to alcohol.
In an interview with BBC News, Mr McGinn said: “The closure of Cuan Mhuire means the chance for broken lives to be repaired has been removed by the decision.”
Cuan Mhuire’s Programme Director Sister Kathleen O’Connor condemned the closure and said that lives would be lost because of the decision made to close the unit.
Sister O'Connor said that she believed the clinic had saved many ill people from death.
Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said that the centre will close its doors for good within a number of weeks, but that a programme ensuring a "managed discharge" of residents with assistance from relevant agencies was underway.
