Divers To Film First Footage Of RMS Carpathia

A team of divers are set to bring up relics and film the first video footage of the wreck of RMS Carpathia, the ship which rescued 705 people from the Titanic in 1912.

Its wreckage lies some 300 miles west of the Devon coastline, 500ft deep in the Atlantic Ocean, after it was sunk in a German torpedo attack six years after the rescue.

Dive organiser Jeff Cornish told the BBC that he hoped to recover a variety of objects from the wreck. He stated: "The ship's bell is going to be a prize possession which we would like to recover.

"What's present on the bridge - cutlery, plates with the Cunard insignia on it - those sorts of things that I think people will be interested in looking at in the exhibition."

The captain of the Carpathia, Arthur Rostron, was hailed as the saviour of the Titanic after he ordered his ship through the icebergs to rescue stranded passengers.
