Police divers search wreckage for missing bodies

Divers will carry out further remote camera searches of the wreck of the sunken Tullaghmurry Lass to try to ascertain if bodies are inside.

Divers believe the remains of some of the three members of the Greene family, who went missing on the boat on 14 February, may be inside.

Michael Greene, 54, his son, 32, and eight-year-old grandson, also called Michael, disappeared after they went to sea to fish for prawns.

The wreckage of their boat was found in 42 metres of water, seven miles off Kilkeel harbour on 21 March, after weeks of searches by local fishermen and the Irish and British Navies.

Remote camera searches of the wreck on Monday April 8 led divers to believe bodies may be inside the wreck, as two pieces of wreckage were recovered for forensic examination.

The divers and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch have been examining the wreckage, recording the damage to the boat with specialist underwater video cameras.

However, the team said there would need to be further investigation and more evidence gathered before they could establish the cause of the tragedy.

Neither the police nor the marine investigators have been willing to speculate on suggestions that the boat’s severely damaged stern and wheelhouse indicate it sank after being hit by a much larger vessel.
