IFA Investigates 'Incident' Between NI Players

The Irish Football Association is investigating an incident between two Northern Ireland players as they prepared to fly home from Reykjavik following their defeat to Iceland in their Euro 2008 qualifier.

According to reports, two players exchanged blows as the squad prepared to board the Icelandair flight to London Heathrow shortly after 7:30am on Thursday morning.

Other players intervened to break up the altercation and cabin crew alerted manager Nigel Worthington to the incident before the flight took off.

According to reports, Sheffield United Winger Keith Gillespie and West Ham defender George McCartney are among those whom the IFA wish to talk to regarding the incident.

A statement on the IFA's web site said: "An incident occurred today between team members of the senior Northern Ireland squad which the President (Raymond Kennedy) and Chief Executive (Howard Wells) are aware of. Both the President and the Chief Executive will investigate the situation and take appropriate action.

"There will be no further comment at this stage."

Northern Ireland lost last night's match 2-1, following an own goal by Keith Gillespie in the 90th minute.
