Civil servant released following police questioning

The civil servant arrested in connection with police inquiries into IRA intelligence gathering at Stormont has been released following questioning.

The man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon following a search of Castle Buildings. His is thought to have had access to potentially sensitive information in the office of the former First Minister David Trimble and Deputy First Minister Mark Durkan.

A police investigation has been ongoing since the arrest and charging of four people over allegations of IRA spying within the Northern Ireland Office.

The allegations have led to the suspension of the power-sharing assembly amid a crisis of confidence in the peace process.

One of the four people charged in connection with alleged intelligence gathering, after police raids and the seizure of documents, was Denis Donaldson, the head of Sinn Féin's administration team at Stormont.

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Paul Murphy has recently announced that all party talks are to be held in a bid to breathe life back into the Province's political solution.

The arrest of the civil servant had led to a further flurry of political speculation that threatened to undermine the round of high-level government talks aimed to at least put the peace process back on track, if not serve to get the Assembly up and running again.
