80-year-old woman abducted in north Belfast

An 80-year-old woman was abducted for a time yesterday after two men posing as policemen called at her home.

The incident occurred in the Cavehill area of north Belfast just before 1pm on Thursday.

After abducting the pensioner from her home, the two men drove her along the Antrim Road for about an hour before picking up a third man on the Ballysillan Road.

The pensioner's handbag was then grabbed and a sum of cash was taken.

The woman was then left on the upper Crumlin Road and had to walk some distance back to Ballysillan.

North Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA Fred Cobain hit out at the abductors. He said: “It beggars belief what drives anyone to put an elderly person through such a terrifying ordeal.

“I would urge everyone in the community to be wary of letting strangers into their homes.

“Those of us living close to elderly people are duty bound to ensure we help them understand the dangers of trusting what any stranger says on the doorstep of their home.”

Police are warning members of the public to check the details of all strangers calling at their home.

Police Inspector George Clarke said people needed to be careful to whom they opened their door.
