Teenage boy injured in pipe-bomb attack
A teenage boy and a pensioner have been injured in a pipe bomb attack in east Belfast.
The 14-year-old boy, Noel Brady, sustained a back injury during disturbances in Short Strand last night after a pipe bomb was thrown into the nationalist Bryson Court area.
The teenager, who was not seriously hurt in the incident, described how he started to run when he saw what looked like "a firework" being thrown over the 'peaceline': "I heard a bang and a saw this flash behind me and something hit me on the backside. I collapsed to the ground." He said he had a lucky escape and that someone could have been killed.
A 76-year-old man was also injured in the pipe bomb attack.
Condemning the attack, east Belfast MLA, Sir Reg Empey, appealed for calm despite continuing disturbances in the area.
He said: "Those who engage in sporadic violence are putting lives at risk and causing distress and misery to many in the community.
"We have been working hard to try and resolve the difficulties that exist in the area and I would appeal to everyone to remain calm at this time."
The police said the incident followed a night of sporadic violence in the area.
Sectarian tensions have been high in the area between the mainly nationalist Short Strand enclave and the neighbouring loyalist community in east Belfast for a number of months.
