£5m movie begins production in province
A £5m film, 'The Great Ceili War', is to commence shooting in Northern Ireland on Friday, October 18.
Shooting on location in Belfast and Glenarm in County Antrim, before relocating production to the Isle of Man, the film is the second joint venture between leading director John Irvin and producer Evzen Kolar.
The film, which has a guaranteed US distribution, stars a host of Irish actors and musicians including Bernard Hill, Colm Meaney, Andrea Corr, Philip Barantini, Shaun Evans, Charlotte Bradley, Katherine Byrne and Ian Shaw, and features cameo appearances from, amongst others, James Nesbitt, Patrick Bergin and David Kelly.
The Chairman of the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission, Colin Anderson, welcomed the film but pointed out that the promise of significantly greater investment from the government of the Isle of Man had caused Northern Ireland to lose out. The production is only shooting on location in the province for four weeks, spending around a quarter of its budget here, before moving on to the Isle of Man.
Set against a backdrop of traditional Irish music in 1970's rural Ireland, this film centres on two brothers, both fiddle players, who meet up again for the first time in 25 years. As band leaders and arch rivals they go head-to-head in the finals of the All Ireland Ceili Band Competition.
Now both in their fifties, and with an old score to settle concerning their estrangement, the brothers' story is one of music, sabotage, love and eventual forgiveness mixed with that of a pair of young star-crossed lovers, both musicians in the rival bands.
