Reid announces new ministerial portfolios

Northern Ireland Secretary of State John Reid has announced the new ministerial portfolios following his decision to suspend devolved government yesterday.

In drafting in a new ministerial team, the government has appointed Ian Pearson and Angela Smith to join Jane Kennedy and Des Browne in running the affairs of Northern Ireland's 11 governmental departments.

Newly appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ian Pearson will assume responsibility for the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP), the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI), the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), and the Economic Policy Unit and Europe.

Angela Smith will assume responsibility for the Department of the Environment (DOE), the Department for Regional Development (DRD) and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL).

Security Minister Jane Kennedy will retain her current NIO responsibilities and assume responsibility for the Department of Education (DE) and the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL).

Des Browne will retain his current NIO responsibilities and assume responsibility for the Department for Social Development (DSD), the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS), Equality, Human Rights and Community Relations.

The two new recruits are both assistant whips in the Commons. Educated at the University of Warwick, Ian Pearson has been MP for Dudley South (previously Dudley West) since 1994.

He was appointed assistant whip in February 2001, having previously served on the Education and Employment Select Committee. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson from 1997-98 and served on the Treasury Select Committee during the last Parliament.

Angela Smith was first elected MP for Basildon in 1997. Following the last general election, she was appointed as an assistant whip and prior to that she was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Paul Boateng, Minister of State at Home Office.

She previously worked as a research officer to Alun Michael MP, the shadow Minister for Home Affairs and the voluntary sector from 1995 to May 1997.
