Former Ulster Scots Agency chief pleads guilty to sex charges

A Co Antrim man has pleaded guilty to sex charges in the United States involving an under-age girl.

Stan Mallon, a former acting chief executive of the Ulster Scots Agency, pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to persuade, induce and entice an under-age girl.

Mr Mallon, originally from Crumlin, had made contact over the internet with a girl whom he thought was 14 years old – but was actually an undercover police officer.

Despite originally denying the charges, as well as travelling between states to engage in sex with a minor, Mr Mallon now faces up to four years in prison.

The 62-year-old father of five will be sentenced on January 22, next year.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr Mallon's family said he had been in "failing physical and mental health" at the time of the offence and that he had made a grave error in judgement which was totally out of character.

Mr Mallon had been on a promotional trip on behalf of the Ulster Scots Agency when he was arrested in connection to the charges.

He has been held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago since his arrest in March.
