Snow Gives Way To 100mph Gales As Winter Bites
Widespread disruption caused by last week's heavy snowfalls has this week given way to gale force winds and heavy rain.
Gusts of up to 105mph battered parts of Ulster on Tuesday night and the early hours of Wednesday forcing the closure of several roads and leaving around 6,000 homes without power.
The north west of the province was the worst affected by the extreme weather conditions which began to hit the country in the early evening.
Torrential rain caused flooding on several arterial routes and high winds brought down around 100 trees causing havoc on Ulster's roads.
Road Service crews worked well into the night to remove fallen trees and debris from roads, and falling trees also caused problems for thousands of Ulster householders, cutting their electricity supplies, severing powerlines, cables and bringing poles down and damaging other equipment.
The north west, Omagh, Coleraine and Ballymena were the worst affected areas.

Graduate Entry Medical Students To Benefit From Tuition Fee Loans
Economy Minister Conor Murphy has announced that from the 2025/26 academic year, students enrolled in the Graduate Entry Medical School at Ulster University's Derry-Londonderry campus will be eligible for tuition fee loans. Previously, graduate entry medical students were unable to access government loans to cover tuition fees.

Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has confirmed that the Department's winter service team is prepared to tackle the current cold snap. Around 300 staff and 130 gritters are ready to salt main roads, while 12 snow blowers are available for deployment if necessary. To ensure a comprehensive winter service, the Department has allocated £3.

Charity Aims To Improve Future Woodlands
A charity has been created which is dedicated to improvement of the quality of native broadleaved trees through tree breeding programmes. Future Trees Trust was launched today by Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill and Shane McEntee, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
