Man in 'stable condition' after shooting

A man is in a stable condition in hospital after he was wounded in a shooting incident in east Belfast last night.

At around 10.20pm last night, a number of shots were fired into a house on Hyndford Street, off the Beersbridge Road.

A 25-year-old man, who was in the living room at the time, was hit in shoulder and side. He was conscious when paramedics arrived and is described as being in a stable condition in hospital.

The man leading the investigation, Detective Inspector George Miller, said that this was a "deliberate attempt to take life" and that the victim is "lucky to be alive".

The police believe that shooting was carried out by loyalists but have yet to establish a motive for the shooting. However, they did stress that the incident had nothing to do with the feuding between loyalists in the area.

A blue Vauxhall car, which is believed to have been used by the gunmen, was found burnt out in the nearby Foxglove Street.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Strandtown on 028 9065 0222.
