The Republic’s Special Criminal Court has remanded a total of five men in custody, charged with being members of the Irish National Liberation Army.
Two of the men, Edward McGarrigle, 42, and John McCrossan, 46, gave Strabane addresses in Melmount Gardens and Bellycolman respectively. Five men in total are facing trial as part of a gardai operation to stop a kidnapping plot. The fifth man, Neil Myles, 53, gave no fixed address.
The non-jury court will hear evidence regarding the attempted kidnapping of a Cork businessman and his family in an attempt to extort money.
Two men were captured close to the scene of the businessman’s home in the affluent Montenotte area of Cork at around 8pm, while the other two were seized waiting in a car on the Old Youghal Road in the city at around the same time.
Following the arrests, garda were able to complete raids in Dingle, Co Kerry and in the outskirts of Limerick, arresting two men. A total of seven were arrested initially and five are facing trial over the incident.
Lawyers told the court there would be applications for bail at another hearing on Friday.
