Controversial Mural To Be Replaced
A notorious UDA mural in Belfast is to be replaced after years of negotiation.
The south Belfast mural, depicting a terrifying skeletal soldier and the grim reaper, will be replaced by an image of King William of Orange.
The decision to remove the image is part of the Greater Village Regeneration Trust's Streetscape Project, which received £18,000 support from the Northern Ireland Arts Council.
The repainting will begin on Monday after years of negotiations with paramilitary groups.
Paula Bradshaw, Director of the GVRT said paramilitaries agreed to the repainting "with the proviso that they decided what would be the replacement, so we went along with their wishes".
DUP MLA for the area Jimmy Spratt said: "It shows that the whole community within the village area is moving forward".
Today the council announced further grants totalling over 500,000 to 18 more community-based projects across the north as part of its 3.3 million pounds re-imaging Communities Programme.

Controversial UVF Mural Completed
A new paramilitary mural has been completed in east Belfast, despite a public outcry. The mural, which is located at Inverwood Court, Sydenham, depicts a masked gunman and it dedicated to the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), which murdered more than 500 people during the Troubles. It replaced a mural of the Belfast-born footballer George Best.

UVF Mural Painted Over George Best Image
Alliance Belfast Councillor Andrew Webb has said that the painting of a UVF mural over an image of George Best is a backwards step. Belfast City Council contributed public money towards the George Best mural at Inverwood Court in East Belfast three years ago.
