Elderly Bangor Man Dies In House Fire
Fire crews were unable to save an elderly man who died last night in a house fire.
The victim, aged in his 80s, was fatally injured following a fire at his home in Bangor, County Down.
The police said he was found by fire crews in the hallway of the house in Innisfayle Drive just after 10pm on Wednesday after he had tried to tackle the blaze himself.
They said that neighbours were alerted by the man's smoke alarm going off and they then called the fire and rescue service.
Police said they were investigating the death, but that it was not being treated as suspicious at the moment.
A post mortem examination is due to be carried out on the body to establish the cause of death.
Two fire appliances tackled the blaze, which caused damage to the hallway of the house.
Stephen Boyd, from the NI Fire and Rescue Service, said crews dealt with the fire within minutes of arriving. The man was taken to hospital where he later died.
"He had discovered the fire before the smoke alarms went off and had been trying to deal with the fire himself," he said.

Minister Condemns Attacks On Fire Crews
Attacks on fire crews place their lives in danger and put communities at risk, said Public Safety Minister Michael McGimpsey today. Condemning a further spate of attacks on firefighters in Dungannon and Londonderry over the weekend, the Minister said it was absolutely unacceptable for anyone to assault emergency workers.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

A gorse fire which has spread over five hectares has broken out near Newcastle, Co Down. The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said the blaze on the Drinnahilly Mountain close to Tollymore Forest park, started on Wednesday, 18 July. Eight fire appliances and 46 firefighters are working to bring the fire under control.
