Critical Injuries Follow Assaults

A visitor from the Irish Republic has been revealed as one of the victims of two serious assaults that took place in Belfast within hours of each other in the early hours of Saturday.

Connacht supporter Paul Newton was in the city for the Magner's League match against Ulster at Ravenhill on Friday.

Mr Newton, from Sligo, was attacked outside his hotel in Bradbury Place and suffered serious head and facial injuries.

He is being treated in the intensive care unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Meanwhile, another man has been arrested over a separate attack, in west Belfast, in which a man in his 30s was left critically ill.

The west Belfast victim was found on the Falls Road and is thought to have been struck several times in the face. He has serious head wounds.
