Man Detained Indefinitely Over Hospital Strangling
A mentally ill man has been detained on an indefinite mental health order after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of a patient in a Rochdale hospital.
Telahum Tedola, 36, had pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 58-year-old Rosalind McManus on the grounds of diminished responsibility at a hearing at Manchester Crown Court in February.
Ms McManus, who is originally from Northern Ireland, was found strangled on a mixed sex ward in Birch Hill Hospital in Rochdale last August.
Tedola, a schizophrenic who had been at the hospital for a week, attacked the 58-year-old, who was a long-stay patient in the hospital.
The court heard how Tedola, who is originally from Ethiopia, had said that he had heard voices which said that Ms McManus was a spy and that he had to kill her.
He had strangled Ms McManus with his belt after following her down a corridor.
At Manchester Crown Court on Thursday, Judge Andrew Gilbert sentenced Tedola to be detained indefinitely.
