Police Probe Cause of Fires

A massive loss of stock at a Jet Ski centre has resulted from a weekend blaze in Comber, Co Down.

Up to £1m worth of stock has been destroyed thanks to one of the walls of the building collapsing, which meant strong winds were fanning the flames, making the fire difficult to control.

The incident was also hard to control because of gas cylinders in the building on the Ballygowan Road in the town.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters had to use a jet of water to keep the gas cylinders in the building cool to prevent a possible explosion.

The blaze was reported at about 10pm on Friday and the police are investigating the cause of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, Police are also investigating a separate incident when a flat in the Waterside area of Londonderry was damaged in a fire.

A spokesperson said at the weekend that it was too early to determine if the cause of the blaze was suspicious, but said that the fire broke out in an unoccupied property at Duddy's court, just off Clooney Terrace in the city.

The emergency services were called to the derelict building shortly after 11pm last Thursday.
