Massive drug find link to border gang
Over £30 million worth of drugs destined for the British Isles was seized by Belgian police at the weekend.
The PSNI and Gardai have now been placed on alert as detectives attempt to track down the gang responsible for the drugs haul.
Belgian police came across an abandoned lorry on a motorway lay-by outside the town of Kortrijk on Saturday. During the search, police uncovered the contraband under a false floor in the trailer. It has subsequently been revealed that the lorry was owned by a north Dublin company and police believe the vehicle was destined for a border town.
The haul reportedly included 1.2 million ecstasy tablets, 34 kilos of heroin, 120 kilos of amphetamines and 140 kilos of cannabis. To get an idea of the scale of the find, the ecstasy alone could supply the whole of the UK's users over any given weekend.
This is a massive boost for authorities, as the illicit cargo could have found its way onto the streets of Northern Ireland in a matter of days if the discovery had not been made.
