Woman injured in gun attack
A woman has been injured after two separate shooting incidents in the province in the past 24 hours.
At around 10pm last night, three shots were fired into a caravan standing on a Travellers' site in west Belfast. One of the bullets hit a 49-year-old woman in the right calf as she watched television inside. A man who was also in the caravan at the time escaped without any injuries. The woman was being treated in hospital last night.
Earlier this morning, shots were fired as police carried out searches in Downpatrick in relation to dissident republican activity.
At around 9.15am, police reported hearing shots whilst they were in the area of the Model Farm. There were no injuries reported and they are currently conducting follow up searches in the area.
SDLP assembly member Eddie McGrady said that recent violence indicated that dissident paramilitary personnel were gathering in the area.
"I am concerned by the current spate of republican incidents against police in Model Farm in Downpatrick," he said.
"It is a matter for the local community, in partnership, and in working with the police to prevent such attacks from taking place. It could easily have resulted in the murder or maiming o a member of our local community.
"In such circumstances, it is important that we act together to prevent an escalation of this violence."
On July 17, the Real IRA admitted that it carried out a rocket attack against an unmarked police car near Downpatrick. At the time Chief Superintendent Robert Robinson, district commander for the area, said: "In the last number of weeks we have had attacks on Downpatrick and Ardglass (police) stations, which were the work of dissident republicans."
The SDLP has been highly critical of the NIO's policing strategy and most especially of Security Minister Jane Kennedy.
Speaking after a teenager was attacked with a hatchet in Antrim over the weekend, South Antrim Patricia Lewsley called on the Prime Minister to replace Security Minister Jane Kennedy.
"It is apparent for all to see that there is confusion as to what her brief actually is – but is clear is that she is proving to be totally ineffective. Jane Kennedy has been conspicuous by her absence," she said.
"She should provide some security for the beleaguered residents in my area. If she cannot do this Tony Blair should re-evaluate her appointment in the first place. The time has come for definitive action, not another PR stunt."
