Six police officers hurt in disturbances
East Belfast has seen another night of violence that has left six police officers injured.
Shortly before midnight police in the lower Newtownards Road area came under attack from large crowds and were subjected to sustained attack from mobs throwing bricks and petrol bombs. Police officers reported firing two baton rounds during the disturbances, but there were no reports of any injuries.
At around the same time, a pipe bomb which was found on Bryson Street was made safe by Army Technical Experts (ATO). The ATOs also recovered elements of a second pipe bomb in the area and took it away for examination. Afterwards, a hand grenade was also made safe in the nearby Clandeboye Drive area.
Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information relating to a white car seen in Thistle Court at 11pm.
The area around Short Strand and Cluan Place was reported to be "relatively quiet" by around 1.45am.
In north Belfast, police were investigating reports that shots had been fired at two houses on Alliance Avenue last night. There were found to be strike marks on two houses in the area.
The SDLP councillor for the area, Martin Morgan, described the shooting as "attempted murder".
"Those inside the house last night were lucky to escape with their lives – this was a serious attempt to carry out murder," he said.
"These nightly attacks are terrorising people and striking fear into the heart of communities. They must end before someone is killed."
In a sinister development, the Red Hand Defenders – a cover name for the UDA – contacted a Belfast newsroom and issued a threat to Catholic residents of north Belfast.
The loyalist paramilitary group said that Catholics would be "forcibly removed" from their homes if they deemed that attacks had been made against the loyalist Glenbryn estate.
Following on from Sir Reg Empey's meeting with Security Minister Jane Kennedy, Sinn Fein councillors Joe O'Donnell and Eoin O Broin will go to Castle Buildings tomorrow morning to discuss interface violence with the minister.
