Newry City Fire Tackled
A major blaze was tackled at a derelict building in Newry last night.
Six fire crews, backed by an hydraulic platform and water tanker, battled successfully to prevent flames spreading from a former Autopart store to surrounding buildings at Monaghan street and Upper Edward Street in the city.
The cause of the outbreak is being investigated.
Meanwhile, local people are blaming arsonists for a spate of gorse fires that were put out yesterday in the Downpatrick area.
Six fire engines were called to tackle the series of fires in Co Down on Sunday.
According to SDLP MLA Margaret Ritchie, the small fires were lit on the Stroule Road near Downpatrick's Model Farm housing estate.
She said that at one stage the flames were just 15 metres from people's homes.
Ms Ritchie has said that these were arson attacks carried out by young people and were an increasing problem.
"It is very important, not only for parents but for schools and the youth clubs and the wider community, to educate children about the issue of social responsibility," she said.
"They have a care and a duty to the local environment, to their neighbours and to elderly people to ensure that such incidents do not happen.
"They should also be advised about the risks that fire can cause, not only to residents, but to themselves."

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has introduced a new online tool to help residents assess their home fire safety. The Home Fire Safety Check coincides with Fire Safety Week, which runs from September 30th to October 6th. The initiative aims to reduce the number of house fires in Northern Ireland.

Fire Couple Rescued As Grain Silo Fire Tackled
As firefighters were dealing with a blaze at Duncrue Industrial Estate this morning in Belfast, it has emerged that a possible fire tragedy was narrowly averted at a north Belfast private house overnight. In what was seen as a lucky escape for the occupants, the two people were rescued by neighbours following the house fire in Ligoniel.

Hard-Hitting Road Safety Message Delivered To Young People
Over 800 young people from schools in Lisburn and Castlereagh attended a hard-hitting road safety message at the PSNI Road Safe Roadshow on 19 November. The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.
