Elderly Victim Suffers Coronary
Although there was initially relief after a 97-year-old man who confronted burglars in his west Belfast home seemed to be well - though shaken - it emerged last night that the victim is being treated in hospital for a suspected heart attack after his house was burgled by a four-man gang.
The burglars forced their way into his Andersonstown Park home at 1.30pm on Saturday and ransacked the top floor.
He was cut on the arm as he struggled with them and was taken to hospital for a check-up following the burglary - but this later proved to be more serious with news of the cardiac.
John Dunne's son, Manus, arrived to take his dad to a church event, but ended up a victim too during the aggravated break-in.
He was at first relieved that his father was not badly injured and said: "He came staggering down the driveway with a poker in his hand, and I don't know what he intended to do, but he was fighting away with them."
Mr Dunne snr was being treated in hospital for cuts to his arm, before suffering the heart attack, which his son said may have been caused after he had warded off a blow while tackling the intruders.
Before driving off, the gang also threatened to kill the man's son who had called to take his father to church.
Yesterday, the victim's son said: "He just took a heart attack last night and I'll have to go down and see him now - they didn't want anybody down earlier on. He's 97 and shouldn't be taking that sort of abuse."
Speaking about the attack on Saturday, he said: "They ran over to the car and one of them said, give it me, give it me. I'll kill him," he said.
"I thought to myself, I am on the way out here."
However, the men then got into the car and drove off.”
Police have appealed for information. They want to hear from anyone who saw a grey or silver vehicle in the area.
