Other NI News In Brief
Road Victim Named
The name of the cyclist killed in a road accident near Crumlin last night has been released. He was David James McCall, 46, from Lisburn. He died after his bike was in collision with a car at Nutts Corner on the Belfast Road. It happened at about 8pm on Tuesday.
Foreigner Snub Condemned
Previous cases of intimidation have led to a south Belfast landlord erecting a sign saying a house for rent is "not available to any foreigners". However, the move has been condemned by Alliance MLA Anna Lo who said she hoped "immediate action" was taken to remove the sign from the house in the Donegall Road area. The news emerged on yesterday's Radio Ulster Talkback programme - who rang a contact number on the sign to be told that the owner "had problems in the past when a foreign tenant was intimidated out of the property". There have been a number of racist attacks against migrants in the Donegall Road's 'Village' area in recent years, but a community group said a lot of work had been done to improve relations.
Salmor Has Energy Bills 'Covered'
A firm that makes manhole frames has worked successfuly with Invest Northern Ireland to 'cover' much of its existing energy costs. Lurgan-based Salmor Industries saved £335,000 through a successful programme of continuous improvement aimed at cutting energy and lead time costs. The company manufactures a range of products including manhole frames, cable protection, and steel and concrete-filled covers for underground utility chambers. It supplies a range of industry sectors including water, electricity and communication. Invest NI provided support to employ a specialist business improvement agent for a three-year period, whose aim was to generate savings for the business of at least three times his annual salary and this target was well exceeded.
RIR On Parade
Co Antrim is to take double honours by hosting the first two of an expected series of Royal Irish Regiment marches through NI's streets when the regiment return from Afghanistan in the autumn. Early details of the first parade - which was agreed unanimously by Ballymena Borough Council - were released this week by politicians involved in the discussions. The parade, for the Royal Irish Regiment's 1st Battalion, is likely to take place in November and is expected to include a march past, a special meal at the new Braid Centre and a certificate for all the soldiers. It was also confirmed that a parade in Larne - also Co Antrim - to confer the freedom of the borough on the Royal Irish will take place on Saturday, November 1.
