Girl found dead in County Donegal took overdose
A teenage girl who was found dead in a field near Lifford in County Donegal, is thought to have taken a lethal mixture of vodka and morphine tablets.
The body of Geraldine Chambers, 14, was found at around 10am on Monday morning, when police received a call that two girls were lying in a field in Ballindrait, two miles away from Lifford. Alisha McGowan, also 14, was found unconscious alongside Geraldine, and was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit.
The alarm was raised on Monday after the girls' families became concerned that the girls had not returned home on Sunday night. Geraldine's elder brother, Colin Chambers, went out to look for the girls, and discovered their bodies lying together in the field, with a vodka bottle and packets of morphine tablets nearby.
Gardaí do not suspect that anyone else was involved in the incident but it is unclear as of yet whether the overdoses were deliberate or accidental.
