£20m investment for East Down colleges
A £20 million investment to provide new purpose-built accommodation at Further and Higher Education’s campuses in Downpatrick, Ballynahinch and Newcastle, has been given the go ahead by Minister for Employment and Learning, Carmel Hanna.
Confirming her Department’s intention to drive forward the scheme at all three campuses through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), Mrs Hanna said the investment was a "very significant development for the East Down area and the community it serves".
She added: "This investment reinforces the Executive’s commitment to the further education sector in Northern Ireland and the central role it is playing in developing the knowledge-based economy that is essential if Northern Ireland is to compete and succeed in the global marketplace.
"My Department sees the economic purpose of this sector as central to their mission and will continue to promote their role in regional economic development.
"Having an intelligent, adaptable and skilled workforce is a critical ingredient in building and maintaining a successful modern economy. The education provided must not just be of a very high quality, but must also reflect the present and future skills and knowledge needs of the local economy."
The Minister explained that discussions would take place with the Institute in the coming weeks to get the project off the ground.
