Construction company fined after man's fall
Barnish Construction Ltd have been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), following an accident that occurred during construction activities in Belfast in January.
At Belfast Magistrate’s Court last week the company pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to ensure safe access to a tower crane.
The accident occurred when Bernard Loughran, a crane driver for the company, fell six metres when the vertical ladder used to access the crane's cab came away from its anchorage point. On investigation it was discovered that the design and assembly of the ladder was inadequate and that it hadn't been properly secured to the tower of the crane.
Barnish Construction Ltd admitted to not maintaining a suitable and safe access to the tower crane operator's cab and was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £41 costs.
