Long Tower Community Centre opens in Londonderry
The new Long Tower Youth and Community Centre, in the Brandywell, Londonderry, has been officially opened.
Completed at a cost of over £700,000 the Long Tower Centre project involved the extension, refurbishment and upgrade of the existing youth club premises.
Speaking at the official opening, Declan O’Hare, Londonderry Development Officer, congratulated the staff and Management Committee of the Long Tower Centre on their vision, dedication and hard work, which brought this major project to fruition. He said: "For almost 60 years, the Long Tower Youth Club has provided an outlet for constructive youth activity in the Brandywell and Long Tower Parish area. It has been synonymous, over the years, with producing legendary sporting figures who have done this community and city proud in a national and international context.
“The state-of the-art facilities provided here at the Long Tower Centre will continue to help promote young sporting talent and build on the proud links this organisation has with the sporting traditions of this city.
The upgraded facility has enabled the Long Tower Centre (formerly the Long Tower Youth Club) to expand the range and number of activities on offer to the people of the Brandywell and Long Tower Parish area. These include sports and recreational programmes for young people aged 6-18, a wide range of adult education courses including hairdressing, beauty therapy, computer training and personal effectiveness, and social events for elderly members of the community.
