Local Man Addresses Labour Conference
A Belfast university lecturer has made history by becoming the first Northern Ireland constituency delegate to address the Labour party's annual conference.
Long-time party member Boyd Black took to the stage in Manchester to call for the formation of Labour candidates in the Province.
Dr Black, a business lecturer at Queen's, opposed a move by Islington North and Luton South to prevent the party organising in Northern Ireland.
Instead, Islington North delegate Ceri Hoywell has insisted Labour's 200-strong NI members should be categorised in the party's international section.
It was argued that Labour should not compete with the SDLP.
Both the Labour National Executive Committee and a speaker representing Labour's Irish Society opposed the move.
Dr Black, who stood as a candidate in the 1998 Northern Ireland Assembly elections, is the first Irish Labour delegate - bar trade union members - to address the conference in 100 years.
He has previously speculated that Labour organisation will emerge in the Province and hinted that the SDLP will split over contentious links with Fianna Fail.

Employment levels in NI reach a new high
Employment in Northern Ireland has risen to a record high and the unemployment rate remains below the UK average, according to new figures. Seasonally adjusted figures for the period January to March 20074 estimate there were 776,000 people in employment in Northern Ireland – the highest figure on record.

Minister welcomes increase in NI jobs
Northern Ireland's Economy Minister, Maria Eagle has today welcomed the continuing growth in Northern Ireland jobs figures. The figures, which were released today, show that Northern Ireland has the highest number of jobs on record, and the unemployment rate remains below the UK average.

Northern Ireland Labour Relations Agency chairman appointed
The Northern Ireland Labour Relations Agency has announced Patrick McCartan as their new chairman. Mr McCartan succeeds the retiring Chairman, Professor Desmond Rea OBE, who currently presides over the 19-member Policing Board which supervises the new Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Local political parties indifferent to Labour decision
Northern Ireland's main political parties have responded with indifference to the decision by the Labour Party to allow people in Northern Ireland to join its ranks. Nearly 90% of delegates at the Labour Party conference in Bouremouth voted in favour of the rule change.

Slight Increase In Unemployment In NI
The unemployment rate in Northern Ireland has increased slightly, according to the latest Labour Market Survey. The current figure stands at 3.3%, up by 0.2% compared to last month. However, the figure is significantly below the rate compared to a year ago and lower than the UK average for the third consecutive quarter.
