Disabled pensioners targeted in robberies

An elderly couple in there 90s have been robbed in their County Down home.

The elderly man, who is severely disabled, answered the front door of his home on the Dromore Road in Hillsborough to a man at about 11am on Tuesday.

The caller, who is believed to be in his 40s, claimed to owe a relative of the man a sum of money.

The robber entered the house, claiming he needed change, and once in, took a sum of money from the man.

The robber escaped in a red Ford Mondeo car, which was seen earlier in the victim’s driveway and beforehand on the Dromore Road on Monday.

The elderly victim and his bedridden wife were uninjured in the incident, but the man suffered shock.

Meanwhile an elderly disabled woman in her 70s was robbed on Wednesday night in her south Belfast home.

The woman who has breathing difficulties entered her house in Lucerne Parade after walking her dog and found two men inside her living room. They claimed to be police officers investigating robberies in the area.

She told the men she felt unwell and asked them to get her a doctor but they refused. One man kept her in the living room while the other ransacked the house and left with a sum of money and other items.

The police have urged householders to be cautious when opening the door to people they don't know or people who fail to identify themselves properly.

If anyone is uncertain about callers to their home, they should contact the police immediately on the emergency 999 number.
