Minister allocates £2m to reduce primary class sizes
Education Minister Martin McGuinness has announced a £2.1 million allocation of funds for the employment of 84 teachers under the class size initiative, which aims to reduce class sizes.
The funding will be allocated to schools in all five education and library board areas to help ensure that class sizes in Key Stage One (P1 – P4) are kept at 30 or fewer pupils.
Mr McGuinness said: “The quality of early learning is vital to later educational progress and my policy is to keep classes for the youngest children at 30 or fewer pupils.
“This funding will result in the employment of 84 teachers in primary schools across the five board areas.”
The announcement follows the allocation of £6.4 million to the class size initiative since 1999/2000. Education and library boards administer the class size policy in consultation with CCMS.
