Police surrounded by hostile crowd fire warning shots
Police officers attempting to make an arrest near to a community interface area Londonderry were forced to fire warning shots into the air.
The officers fired shots into the air when they were surrounded by a crowd of around 40 youths who emerged from the nationalist Bogside area of the city and threw stones bottles and other missiles at the officers.
The incident took place at around 8:30pm on Wednesday when a crowd gathered at Nailor's row interface area as police were making an arrest.
Nationalist community representatives including Mitchell McLaughlin, Martin McGuinness and Mary Nelis of Sinn Féin earlier joined Derry Councillors in an open letter appealing for an end to sectarian attacks in the City.
The letter denounced the sectarian attacks as "reflecting the worst type of sectarianism emanating from violent unionism in Belfast".
The nationalist community leaders also said they rejected "attempts to portray those who participate in acts of sectarianism as representing any shade of republicanism".
