Aldi Expansion Leads To 650 Jobs
Discount supermarket chain Aldi is planning a €350 million expansion in Ireland that could create 650 jobs.
A total of 35 new stores are planned, including a distribution centre to be built in Mitchelstown in Co Cork.
The German-owned plans to open 17 of the stores before the end of next year with management focusing on new developments in Drogheda, Co Meath, Wexford town, Dublin and Mallow, Co Cork.
Some 490 jobs will be created in the stores while 160 people will be employed in the new distribution centre to support Aldi`s expansion in the south of the country. Construction will start next March.
Aldi UK and Ireland managing director Paul Foley said the number of shoppers in its Irish stores increased by 25% in the last year and sales were up 20%.
Mr Foley said: "We are very pleased with the performance of our business in recent months and are poised to grow even further.
"New customers are trying Aldi because they’re more conscious of seeking out value for money."
Aldi already has 59 stores in Ireland with another two shops opening in Dungloe, Co Donegal and Carrigtwohill, Co Cork later this month.
