Leading LVF member found dead in prison
The man said to be the leader of the Loyalist Volunteer Force, Mark 'Swinger' Fulton, has been found dead in his cell in Maghaberry Prison.
Said to have been suffering from bouts of depression, it is understood that Fulton was found with a belt tied around his neck.
Fulton (42) was a close associate of former LVF leader and founder of the paramilitary organisation Billy Wright who was murdered by the Irish National Liberation Army in the Maze Prison in 1997.
Fulton was on remand in prison accused of conspiracy to murder following a loyalist feud in Portadown two years ago.
The circumstances surrounding Fulton's death have not been made known, but prison authorities confirmed that an investigation is under way.
Speaking on Radio Ulster earlier today Pastor Kenny McClinton, who was a mediator when the LVF handed over a small number of weapons in 1998, said that Fulton's wife was distraught.
Pastor McClinton said he did not know what had taken place, but that he had offered his condolences to the Fulton family.
