Five Charged After Derry Protest

Five men have been charged with a number of alleged offences, following skirmishes at a Londonderry anti-war protest.

The demonstration was held outside the offices of US defence firm Raytheon yesterday.

The firm is based in the city's science and technology park.

Members of the Derry Anti-War Coalition met to raise opposition to the continuing conflict in Gaza, where hundreds of civilians, including children, have been killed.

Up to 70 people gathered to take part in the demonstration.

No staff were prevented from entering the premises, however Raytheon raised concerns about the welfare of its employees.

Despite this, a company spokesman said Raytheon respected the right for peaceful protests.

Anti-war campaigner Eamonn McCann had stressed: "We have absolutely nothing against people in other plants and there was absolutely no need for them to feel intimidated."

During the protest nine woman chained themselves to the top floor of the Raytheon building, but were later removed.

Arrests were made at the scene and five men, aged between 18 and 66, have now been charged with a variety of alleged criminal offences.

The charges include impersonating a police officer, assaulting police, criminal damage and burglary.
