Bushmills Arson Arrest

An alleged overnight arson attack in Bushmills in which a car was set alight is being probed by the police.

It is believed a petrol bomb was used in the car blaze incident which took place in the Haw Road area of the Co Antrim town.

A police spokesperson confirmed two nearby sheds were also "significantly damaged" in the fire.

It also emerged that the presence of gas cylinders meant nearby residents had to be evacuated for a period.

It was also later revealed that a 40-year-old male was arrested and is this morning assisting detectives with their inquiries.

Also in the same area overnight, a separate security alert in Portrush was declared a hoax early on Thursday morning.

Controlled explosions were carried out on two suspicious objects by Army technical officers, discovered in the Dhu Varren area of the seaside resort.

A number of items were taken away from the scene for further examination.

Once again, homes were evacuated in the alert.
