Bulmers Staff Fear The Worst On Jobs

Staff at one of Ireland's largest cider brewers are growing concerned for their jobs following an unscheduled meeting called by management.

The meeting, which ended this morning, involved management and workers at the Bulmers cider factory in Clonmel, but the outcome expected to emerge later this morning.

There are fears of job losses at the company, as the industry has been in serious decline since November.

The company's owner C&C's interim report last year revealed Revenue for the three months to 30 November 2008 declined by 13% compared with the same period last year. The report said: "This performance reflects a decline of 19% for C&C’s Cider division. Performance over the seasonally weak months of January and February is expected to continue this trend."

Over 400 staff were briefed by local managing director Aidan Murphy this morning and will be further briefed by their union officials later.

Two years ago, Bulmers employed more than 600 workers, but a downturn in the sale of cider has seen that number reduced to 417.
