Durkan sets targets for e-government delivery
Deputy First Minister Mark Durkan has told delegates at the 4th annual government Computing Conference in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall that government departments will deliver 25% of key services by the end of this year.
The Minister said: "Modernising government continues to be a top priority for this administration and e-government will be one of the major enablers for modernising its services. By the end of this year, 25% of key services for each of the Northern Ireland departments will be delivered electronically."
Mr Durkan then set a target date of 2005 for all government departmental services to be delivered electronically. Mr Durkan said the departments would publish their e-business strategies in the near future setting out how they will achieve targets for electronic service delivery.
He continued: “A wide portfolio of channels including the Internet and digital television already exists through which we can deliver our services including self assessment for tax returns and vehicle licensing. While looking to be innovative we must also recognise the needs of our customers who may prefer to receive a more personal face-to-face service and we will continue to provide that facility.”
Referring to the contribution made by the private sector in helping to deliver some of the key services, the Deputy First Minister said: “The partnership approach will have to involve not only private sector providers and government agencies but also public sector unions and those involved in the community and voluntary sectors who are close to the needs of our users.”
