Criminal factions will never stop democratic politics working in Northern Ireland, Secretary of State Shaun Woodward said in Washington this week. Speaking at a lunch hosted by the British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald and attended by a wide range of politicians and opinion formers ahead of yesterday's key St Patrick's Day event at the White House Mr Woodward said: "The events of the last week show that politics is working in Northern Ireland. Understandably the two attacks shocked and horrified people across the world and captured the headlines. Inevitably this has led people to ask what does this mean for Northern Ireland? Fundamentally the answer has come loud and clear in the response to those attacks: the criminals will fail. They wanted to damage the peace process and the political progress - instead they have strengthened it," he said. See: Obama Lauds 'Heroic' NI
