Funding Brief On North West's EC Cash

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún is in Co Londonderry today for a briefing on the £18.5 million available for the North West through the EC-backed Rural Development Programme. She is meeting the Mayor of Limavady Borough Council, Cllr Brenda Chivers, who will host a briefing by Chief Executive of Limavady Borough Council, Liam Flanagan and senior staff regarding the local roll out of Peace III and the Rural Development Programme. "There are significant funds available for our rural communities through the Rural Development Programme and the roll out of Peace III funding," said the MEP. "Anyone who is interested in tapping into this financial assistance should make sure that get in touch with the council and the Local Area Groups (LAGs) responsible for distributing much of this funding," noting that Sinn Féin will offer support and encouragement. The £18.5 million funding is allocated across rural communities in Limavady Borough Council, Derry City Council, Omagh District Council and Strabane District Council.

Fermanagh Teen Road Victim Named

A teenager from Co Fermanagh who was knocked down and killed in Co Donegal in the early hours of Wednesday has been named as Nicholas Kille, 18, from Lisnaskea. He had been out celebrating St Patrick's Day when he was hit by an articulated lorry on Main Street, Bundoran, at just after midnight. He was taken to Sligo General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The principal of St Comhghall's school in Lisnaskea, where Mr Kille was a former pupil, said he was a "gentle giant" who would be "sorely missed".

Prison Staff Applauded

Three officers and a volunteer from the Northern Ireland Prison Service were yesterday presented with special 'Butler Trust' awards for outstanding achievement. They received their awards from the Patron of the Butler Trust, the Princess Royal during a special presentation ceremony at Buckingham Palace. A Principal Officer was recognised for his work in heading up the Prisoner Escort and Court Custody Service with his work and attention to detail said to have ensured a smooth handover from the outside contractor to NIPS. As a result, significant savings have been made and used in other areas of the service, improving overall security. The Prison Service Protection Scheme (PSPS) based at the NIPS College in Millisle was given the Paul Mason Award for Staff Care & Welfare.

Contracts Awarded

Nearly £6million of public procurement contracts have been awarded for supplies and services alone since the start of February. These contracts are specifically for supplies and services and are in addition to those awarded for capital investment projects. The figure was revealed by NI Finance Minister Nigel Dodds who highlighted that the Stormont Executive was on track to deliver the highest level of public procurement spend on record. The Minister welcomed the continued investment and said: "The value of tenders issued and signed off in the past fortnight alone shows the continued investment in the local economy by the Executive. This work forms part of the £2.2billion we will spend on procurement locally this year, around £1.5billion of which will be on capital investment projects."

Building Training Scheme Announced

Constructing Excellence in Northern Ireland (CEni) has unveiled details of its Spring Modern Procurement Training Programme. The announcement follows on from two previous programmes, which ran in Spring and Autumn 2008. The eight module Programme will be delivered over a period of eight consecutive weeks between the 23 April and 11 June. The programme is developed by CEni - a centre of excellence developed through partnership - which represents all sectors of the construction industry, and provides a unique bridge between suppliers, contracting organisations, clients, consultants, Government and the research community.

Belfast Software Firm Sold

Major names Audemat and APT Licensing have jointly announced that the broadcast hardware division of APT has been sold to the Audemat group of broadcast equipment providers. APT, the Belfast-based manufacturer of the award-winning WorldCast and WorldNet codecs becomes part of a formidable amalgamation of Audemat companies providing innovative broadcast technologies to the television and radio industry, telecoms operators and regulatory bodies.

Support for northwest business announced
Three new initiatives to encourage entrepreneurship and business growth in the northwest were announced yesterday evening as part of Invest NI's 'Go For It week'. The programme, developed under the Northwest Action Plan, is designed to offer further support to businesses that have already participated in the 'Start a Business' programme.
