'Tele Broadsheet Format Abandoned
Next Tuesday's broadsheet Belfast Telegraph will be the last.
The paper is replacing the traditional way of readers folding the large format paper to enjoy the days' news by making its entire range of editions tabloid sized.
Initially, the paper launched a morning tabloid edition of the newspaper in March 2005. The new compact version of the Independent News and Media-owned title was originally made available to readers until lunchtime, when the long-established broadsheet taking over for the rest of the day.
That has been the case for the last four years.
This earlier development followed a re-design of their weekend title, Sunday Life which was launched that January with a new modernized design, improved lifestyle content and advertising platforms.
Closely following this move was the launch of the new Saturday daily paper on 19 February 2005.
This featured a format change from broadsheet to compact with a new morning edition allowing sport previews.
On 22 March the Belfast Telegraph extended the morning edition to Monday-Friday in compact format, keeping the later editions in the traditional broadsheet format.
Now, as the Royal Avenue 'Tele office says goodbye to the broadsheet altogether, the all-compact format marks another important milestone.
The Belfast Telegraph was first published as the Belfast Evening Telegraph on 1 September 1870 by brothers William and George Baird.
Its first edition cost half a penny and ran to four pages covering the Franco-Prussian war
