Discussions held on Young's Bluecrest closure
SDLP Agricultural spokesperson and MLA for South Down, PJ Bradley has met Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey on Tuesday May 7 to discuss the closure of a County Down fish factory.
As one of Northern Ireland's biggest scampi processors, Young's Bluecrest fish factory in Kilkeel are to axe around 150 jobs as the company is planning to re-locate its operation to Scotland.
Speaking after his meeting with Sir Reg, Mr Bradley said: "The Minister did express a sincere understanding of the plight facing employees of Bluecrest Seafoods. He stated that the suddenness of the announcement came as a shock to him and his department. It appears that the company did not contact the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment in advance of the proposed closure being announced."
Mr Bradley added that further meetings are planned for the rest of the week in an effort "to find out what the real agenda is and if matters can be addressed to the satisfaction of both the employees and the management of Young's Bluecrest Seafoods".
Ulster Unionist Party Agricultural Minister George Savage has also called for swift action to be taken to protect the long-term future of Ulster's prawn fishermen.
He said his party was calling on the Minister to "explore ways of support for the industry as well as the employees hit by the company's decision".
Earlier a spokesman for the company said a shortage of prawns had contributed to their decision to move the firm's operation away from Northern Ireland.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.

Politicians Help 'Kick Hate Into Touch'
An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.
