Economy Fails To Dampen Balmoral Show Enthusiasm
The countdown to Northern Ireland's largest agricultural Show officially got underway this week - with little sign of being hit by the recession.
The Ulster Bank-backed Balmoral Show is long established as the main event in Northern Ireland's agricultural calendar and promises to deliver its usual blend of competition and pageantry. Running from Wednesday 13th May to Friday 15th May, the Show will see over 400 companies exhibiting.
There are also increases in the number of entries in many of the livestock sections, proving that the current climate does not seem to have dampened the enthusiasm of the competitors.
The Show attracted attendance figures of over 70,000 in past years, and organisers are confident that similar attendance levels will be achieved in 2009.
RUAS Chief Executive Colin McDonald explained: "We recognise that times are tough for families and business throughout the country but we are delighted to report that we have a full house in terms of trade and livestock exhibitors.
"We're looking forward to recreating the usual community atmosphere and providing three days of colour and competition for our visitors," he said.
Daily pedigree livestock competitions will be interspersed with dog agility displays, pony club games, parades of prize-winning animals and sheep shearing contests.
Equestrian lovers will have an opportunity to view the International Show jumping competitions, Inter-hunt chase and the prestigious Equestrian classes.
The Show would not be complete without the involvement of traditional family favourites - the children's farm, rare breeds and the Friends of Ferguson vintage display.
The headline acts in the arena this year will be Motorcross display team - The Bolddog Lings.
The Children's Farm provides the perfect opportunity to see a range of farm yard animals at close quarters.
A dedicated Schools' Trail allows pupils to explore food and farming life, while a simulator, climbing wall and rodeo bull offer recreational entertainment for the brave hearted.
Meanwhile, country market stalls offering a range of home made treats and organic produce will sit alongside the high street giants such as Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Asda, Co-Op and Sainsbury's.
