Bus Chaos Expected

Dublin is facing potentially chaotic scenes this weekend after drivers narrowly rejected Labour Court proposals on the cost-cutting plans put forward by Dublin Bus.

The court, which mediates in industrial disputes, had responded to Dublin Bus's maligned plans with recommendations that shift-pay arrangements be protected and that weekend overtime earning potential for drivers be increased.

But the sticking point of the firm's plan to remove 120 buses from its fleet is thought to have led to the narrow defeat by workers.

Yesterday, SIPTU and the NBRU announced their members had narrowly rejected the recommendations.

A spokesman from Siptu said: "SIPTU members have voted by a very small majority to reject the latest proposals to emerge from the Labour Court to resolve the Dublin Bus dispute.

"The union's Branch Organiser Willie Noone has called on the company to provide space for him to consult with the members and identify the outstanding issues that still need to be addressed."

Dublin Bus says it will now begin implementing its cost-cutting plans from this Sunday, but SIPTU has warned that industrial action is likely if any changes are made without agreement.
