Xilinx Employees Fear For Jobs
There are growing concerns over the jobs of some 100 employees at Dublin technology firm Xilinx.
Staff have become increasingly worried after a meeting with management was called this morning at the Citywest offices where it runs research and development and engineering operations.
The Silicon Valley based company employs 400 people and manufactures microchips that can be programmed for use TV set top boxes, space ships and satellites.
The company began in 1984, and has since seen revenue increase to the region of $2 billion (€1.5 billion).
Xilinx has been repeatedly recognized as one of Fortune magazine's best companies to work for, and its customers represent just over half of the entire programmable logic market, at 51%.
The company employs 400 staff in Dublin, and the jobs likely to be cut are those of skilled electronic engineers and technicians.
Dublin is the company's European headquarters, where it operates a research and development, operations and engineering centre.

M&S Drivers' Strike Looms
It looks likely today that deliveries to Marks and Spencer stores throughout the UK will be hit by a threatened drivers' strike. Some 100 staff at worldwide courier company DHL's centre in Mallusk near Belfast and two depots in England are considering walking out after a pay freeze, the union Unite said.

Derry's Arntz Belting Heads For Trouble
The future for a struggling Pennyburn fan belt factory, which currently employs around 110 people, is looking bleak. The manufacturing plant, Arntz Belting Company, went to a three-day week in December and also sought 28 redundancies in March. However, the global recession has led to the firm's parent company looking at further cuts.

Tipperary Hotel Refusal Hits Job Opportunities
News that the Irish Planning Appeals board has rejected proposals to build a contentious hotel development in Tipperary will disappoint local building contractors. The development, which received strong opposition from locals, was to be built on a Cashel site, formerly owned by the Presentation Sisters.

Wexford closure leads to engineering job losses
Wexford-based Pierce's Engineering is to close with the loss of more than 40 jobs. The company has been in negotiations with staff for the last five months over compensation for relocation to a nearby site, but employees recently voted to reject a pay offer recommended by the Labour Court.

Prometric To Create 40 High-Skilled Jobs
Prometric has announced it is to invest more than €3.5m to expand its operation in Dundalk and create 40 new high skilled jobs. Peter Fitzpatrick, Fine Gael TD for Louth, said: "Prometric are to invest over €3.5 million in its presence in County Louth for joint announcements covering a three-year research partnership with DCU.
