Rain Hits 'Slow' M2

As heavy rain brought Belfast-bound traffic to a crawl this morning, (pictured) motorists had time to chew over an official admission that the recent upgrade of the M2 while reducing delays at Sandyknowes also increased congestion closer to Belfast city centre at peak times. As reported yesterday, the details were revealed by NI Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy. He told the Assembly the improvements meant traffic was being "delivered much more quickly to the Nelson Street off slip and York Street junction." The Minister said the Roads Service has now plans to provide major improvements to the York Street area as he indicated the Nelson Street/York Street area is now a 'choke point'.

City Hall Remembers Somme

Soldiers from Northern Ireland who fought in the Battle of the Somme are being remembered today, the anniversary of the start of the bloody battle. A wreath will be laid at Belfast's Cenotaph this morning to mark the 93rd anniversary of the fateful allied attack. It is one of several commemorations, recalling the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division who died alongside their comrades of the 16th (Irish) Division. More than 2,000 soldiers from Northern Ireland died on the battle's first day. Lord Mayor of Belfast Naomi Long and councillors will join representatives of the armed forces, ex-services associations and the main churches, for a short procession from Wellington Street to the City Hall for the wreath-laying ceremony. Somme Battlefield Visited

The NIO Secretary of State Shaun Woodward represented the British Government today at the annual Somme commemoration in France. He attended commemoration services at Thiepval and Ulster Tower and laid wreaths in memory of those who lost their lives in one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War. "I have the deepest respect for those whose memory we honour today and hold this as one of the greatest responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Through the various acts of remembrance taking place today, not just at the Somme but across Northern Ireland, their memory lives on," he said.

Driver Assaulted In Robbery Bid

The police are seeking information after a lorry driver was punched in the head during an attempted armed robbery in Dungannon. It happened at a transport yard on the Killyliss Road at about 4.30am on Wednesday. It is understood three men, two armed with guns, followed the lorry into the yard before approaching the driver. The men made off when the warehouse alarms went off. Police are seeking help from anyone with information about the three men, who spoke with Belfast accents and were wearing dark clothing, and were travelling in a silver Transit van. An ATM machine was attacked with a stolen digger near the scene of today's incident earlier this week.

New Social Houses Promised

As the first residents moved into a new £1.1m housing scheme in Glenbryn Park, north Belfast, this week, the government has renewed its pledge to provide many more homes this year. Speaking at the event, Stormont Housing Minister, Margaret Ritchie said: "I want to deliver more new homes than ever before and this year, we will deliver 1,750 new houses." The new development just opened has been provided by Belfast Community Housing Association with the support of the NI Housing Executive. It comprises three, four bedroom and four, three bedroom family houses.

Tesco Extends Border Prices Cuts

Retail superstore Tesco has announced plans to slash prices at its Dublin stores over the next two weeks. The company has come under pressure to extend its price cuts throughout Ireland after announcing last month it would cut 12,000 prices at its outlets along the Irish border by an average of 22%. However, competitors and ministers interpreted the move as "cynical" at the time or the announcement and pressure has been mounting for the supermarket chain to pass the savings on. The retailer now says the cuts will be introduced in Dublin stores over the coming weeks and in the rest of its Irish stores by August. Tesco says the move will help prevent around €200m in shoppers' money from going across the border to Northern Ireland in order to avail of cheaper prices.

Ballygawley Carriageway Sorted

Road works totalling £4.5m are to be carried out in the Dungannon and south Tyrone area this year, it has been announced. Speaking on the investment, NI Transport Minister Conor Murphy said the ongoing construction of the Dungannon to Ballygawley dual carriageway is progressing well, with completion expected at the end of next year.
