Ulster Unionist slams Consignia move to close Portadown office
An Ulster Unionist Assembly Member has announced he is seeking talks with the company which runs the Post Office over the imminent closure of the postal sorting office in Portadown.
Consignia, formerly known as the Post Office announced on Monday they were closing three of Northern Ireland’s Parcelforce depots at a loss of 140 jobs.
Parcel Force depots in north Belfast, Londonderry and Portadown will close leaving just one operating Parcelforce depot in Belfast’s Harbour Industrial Estate.
It is part of Consignia’s three year £1.2 billion rescue plan which the company said would eventually see 15,000 jobs axed.
George Savage who represents the area of Upper Bann said it was “ludicrous” to close a sorting office in such a busy city centre.
“It is all the more ridiculous when this new state of the art sorting office was built only a few years ago to replace the former sorting offices in Lurgan and Portadown.”
“It beggars belief,” he added.
Mr Savage said he was seeking urgent meetings with Consignia to try and reverse the decision.
“The management of Consignia should be called to account. After all it has turned a perfectly viable company into one which is losing £1.5 million very single day.”
He has also appealed to all post office users in Portadown to write to Consignia asking for the reversal of this policy. (AMcE)

Belfast to be sole vehicle tax office open next week
Belfast will have the only Local Vehicle Licensing Office open to the public next week as the civil service staff union escalates strike action over pay. DVLNI said it had been advised by NIPSA of continuous strike action by their members from Monday 26 April.

Rural Post Offices get funding boost
Some of Northern Ireland's most deprived rural areas received a boost today on the launch of a £750,000 fund to support Post Office branches. The Government said it hoped the Fund would help sub postmasters to develop and improve services for their local communities.
