Economic Conference Announced

Delegates from across the UK and Ireland will converge in Belfast next month for a major conference focusing on the economic downturn.

CBI Northern Ireland and public affairs company Stratagem will host the event on the 6 October in the Europa Hotel.

Announcing the plans, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said the high-profile autumn conference would feature key contributions from across the islands and an Icelandic expert.

Keynote speaker Halla Tómasdóttir, dubbed 'the Icelandic financial expert who got it right', will address senior political and financial figures from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Westminster, Scotland and Wales.

Delegates will gather to consider 'How small countries deal with the downturn'.

Ms Tómasdóttir is the Executive Chair and co-founder of Audur Capital, one of the few successful Icelandic financial companies, and the author of a report in January 2008 warning the then Prime Minister that Iceland's financial model was unsustainable.

He didn't listen - and lost his job. She was right - and thrived.

Among those lined up to give their responses to Ms Tómasdóttir; consider what challenges remain; look at how business and politics can work together; and discuss preparations for the years following the recession, are Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster MLA, Scottish Minister for Enterprise Jim Mather MSP, and Angela McGowan, Chief Economist at the Northern Bank.
