Republican Faction Behind Bomb Plot

A 600lb bomb defused close to the border yesterday, was planted by a small republican splinter group, according to reports.

Mainstream dissident groups the Real and Continuity IRA are not thought to have been behind the potentially deadly plot.

The explosives were discovered in the border village of Forkhill, in south Armagh more than a week ago.

It was 100lb greater than the car bomb which detonated in Omagh town centre in 1998, killing twenty-nine people and unborn twins.

Police and specialist army personnel spent one week securing the rural Forkhill area.

Some nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as the operation continued.

It is now believed the bomb was planted by Oglaigh na hEireann, described as a 'breakaway from a breakaway' group.

Police said the bomb had a command wire running from where it was planted in Northern Ireland to a firing point across the border.

PSNI Chief Inspector Sam Cordner said local residents and security teams had been put at "significant risk".

"Their [the terrorist's] actions were reckless and dangerous in the extreme. Their target may have been the police, but they did not care who they killed or injured," he said.

It is believed the explosive was homemade and fertiliser-based, similar to those found in Castlewellan, Co Down and Rosslea in Fermanagh earlier this year.
